Mario Croce was an industrialist with a passion for sports. He practiced boxing from 1935 to 1942, then became passionate about motoring and was a Lazio champion, qualifying for the final of the Volante d’Argento. He was interested in and practiced tennis, and was among the founders of the Eur Tennis Club. In 1961 he became a board member of Lazio Nuoto and, in 1970, president of Lazio Rugby. He came to golf when the Real Estate Company decided to leave the Club and put it up for sale. A cordate of Members failed to conclude, due to the low bid, its purchase which, instead, Mario Croce happily closed by becoming President of the Olgiata Golf Club in 1979 and holding the position until 1994. He served as a F.I.G. councilor and also as president of the Lazio Regional Committee of the F.I.G. Another nobleman in the destiny of the Olgiata Golf Club, he knew little or nothing about golf when he moved the Dormello Olgiata Equestrian Center from Rome to Bolgheri. Mario Incisa Della Rocchetta, in 1964, was the natural heir to the presidency of the golf club after the passing of its first president Francesco Ruspoli di Morignano, and he continued its work by broadening, in the 10 years he directed the club, his horizons and his family.
In 1961 the Roman nobleman Francesco Ruspoli Duca di Morignano, whom friends familiarly called Frank, was called to the presidency of the newly formed Olgiata Golf Club. He had already served as president of the Rome-Acquasanta Club and, for 25 years was president of the F.I.G.. Such was the esteem in which he was held in international golf that, for a two-year period, he was also President of the International Golf Federation. His commitment, his great passion for the sport and the charisma he enjoyed were instrumental in the development of golf in Italy, which then had only a few thousand players.
